Valu Ford and Chrysler

You can call it old-fashioned. You can call it offensive. You can call it a dinosaur (tee-rex, get it?) The Ram TRX won Truck of the Year with its 702-hp supercharged V-8. Truck performance enthusiasts can agree there’s something special about supercharger whine and V-8 rumble hurtling you along the trail.

What’s New

  • The Ram 1500’s new digital instrument cluster
  • Rear-seat reminder and an LED hitch lamp are now standard
  • Glove box now features a sanitizing UV light

What We Think

We knew the TRX was a winner from the moment we drove it. It is not a value-play, nor is it a world-saving EV work truck, but a versatile sport truck that can handle trails, dune areas, and long hauls with ease.

The top-dog Ram’s on-road ability is perhaps most surprising as its trick Bilstein shocks keep body roll to a minimum without compromising ride quality. With the transmission tuned, the supercharged V-8 is always ready to show off, no matter what the road may bring.

Performance, Efficiency, and Towing

The TRX is equipped with a single engine, the 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 that is used in the Hellcat models of Dodge. This powerhouse engine dishes out an impressive 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful gas pickup currently on the market. Four-wheel drive is standard for this muscle truck and it comes with a paddle shiftable eight-speed automatic transmission. We tested the TRX from 0-60 mph and saw a time of 4.1 seconds, putting it near the top of our list for quickest pickups ever tested.

Fuel economy is predictably poor. The EPA rates the TRX at just 10/14 mpg city/highway, which we can attest is hard to achieve when you want to experience all 702 horsepower once in a while. Towing up to 8,100 pounds and hauling 1,310 pounds in the bed, it is also still something of a workhorse.

 Safety Ratings and Features

The Ram 1500 on which the TRX is based is exceptionally safe for a full-size truck, earning both a 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick and a NHTSA five-star overall safety rating. Driver assist tech is standard with Ram, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. Ready to upgrade?
